Teachers as Crew

Teacher as student. That's the philosophy behind our hands-on approach. And that's what sets our workshop apart in the world of professional development. Come ready to work and fail and improve. It's what you expect of your students back home, and it's the result hundreds of teachers have seen after a week's worth of hands-on assignments at our workshops.

How to Teach Film

Recharge your batteries with engaging sessions that range in topic from shooting basics to classroom management and organization. ASB senior staffers and film professionals will leave you with a greater understanding of the craft and fresh ideas to incorporate in your classroom.

Community

One of the most valuable aspects of our workshops is being around, learning from, and commiserating with other storytelling teachers from around the country. New teachers will learn from the victories and mistakes of the veterans. Veteran teachers will be energized by new workflows and fresh ideas.

Teacher Reviews

  • The biggest take away from the workshop I got, other than a number of cool assignments I used the very next semester, was how stressful it was to write, produce, and edit something in a short amount of time. It put us in the shoes our students wear, and it was sometimes nerve wracking. I loved every minute of it. It changed my perspective a little, and made me appreciate what the students go through. It was nice to reverse roles. I think every teacher should do that once in a while. You end up appreciating the student's perspective a little more as a result.

  • This workshop completely changed the way that teach my Documentary & Filmmaking course. I walked away with so many fresh and helpful ideas. I keep hoping for a level 2 or returners course. I would be the first to sign up. So often, when you attend PD, you come away with one or two small things that you will use. This was so different. I use something that I learned in the workshop nearly every day. The only downside is that my students are sick of hearing me talk about what an amazing experience it was.

  • "The ASB Film workshop is chock full of hands-on filming exercises that put the teacher in the student seat! We had a blast producing films with teachers from across the country. My favorite project had us working with professional actors for our film!"

Elaine McDonald | Lee’s Summit, MO

  • The first-ever ASB Film Workshop in 2021 was a game changer! Josh, Mehl, and the film workshop team presented a curriculum that was engaging and informative. I used every single lesson plan. It is so gratifying to hear your 8th grade film student say to another 8th grader at the STN Convention, "Do you know the Kuleshov Effect?" Bravo, ASB Film Workshop! I am so grateful. Please keep sharing the great ideas and lesson plans. I love it!

    Dina Treibel | Encinitas, CA

  • The ASB Film Workshop helped me get the ball rolling on our school's very own film program. I definitely recommend this workshop to learn the skills your students need to know for the film industry.
