Teachers Say Stuff

With apologies to the Beatles, I get by with a little help from my friends on this blog post.

I recently asked broadcast teachers who have attended our ASB Workshop in the past to tell me some of their go-to phrases they find themselves using over and over with their video kids, and boy did they come through. So let’s dive in. Below you will find some wisdom, some food for thought, and quite possibly, a few laughs.

“It’s not hard, but it’s time consuming...now get to work!” -Deborah Franklin

“It’s never a good thing to cut off the top of someone’s head!” -Pete O’Farrell

"That definitely sounds like a 'you' problem. What are you going to do about it?" -Jana Bulloch

“We are all on a different step, but we all have the same goal: keep moving up that staircase with every project.” -Kenny Taylor

“What’s the SOLUTION?” is my favorite thing to say, especially to cut off students when they start rattling off excuses or complaints for something not done or screwed up, regardless of where the fault lies. -Pam Dixon

“If your b-roll was sushi your audience would puke.” -Jami Williams

“Here’s a picture I took of the camera bag and equipment one of you left out in the hallway yesterday.” -Robert Doherty

“What could you be doing for your video right now?” -Laathew Maanen

“Are you tired of your stories looking bad? Well, maybe you should actually sit down and write it first instead of throwing things together.” -Sharlo Rogers

“No editor ever complained about having too much b-roll. If you think you have enough, go grab 5-10 more shots.” -Corey Hale

“I’ve got a fever, and the only prescription is more b-roll.” -Rob Bushman

“Did you use the tripod you took? Not sure how without the plate.” -Debbie Whitelaw Cagagnaro

"Well, everything is optional." Do I need more than one interview....this b-roll is shaky, can I still use it....do I have to take a tripod.... It just answers so many of the things we hear on a daily basis that the kids know the answers to already but still ask. -Dennis Leizear

“Don’t tell me you know how to do it, show me you know how.” -Krista McKim

“You can NEVER have enough b-roll.” -Michael Hatch

“Good video is all about good audio.” -Jim Ellenberger

“Do not put off tomorrow what you can do today.” -Elaine McDonald

“A story that was suppose to air yesterday does us no good today.” -Andrea Nicole

“Your script is your map...you’re going to get lost and waste time without it!” -Pam Andrews

“No one thinks you are funny, so stop trying to be.” -Corey Clingan

T: “Do you have everything you need?” S: “Yes” . A few minutes later: student sneaking in to pick up memory card... -Guy Delcominette
