NAB Show 2022 Highlights

ASB is in no way affiliated with or compensated by any companies represented in our coverage of the 2022 NAB Show.

The NAB Show is the biggest gathering of broadcast professionals in the country. Thousands of vendors show up to give a sneak peek at their newest production gear. We visited hundreds of booths to find anything that might be useful to video, film, and broadcast teachers.

Aputure makes good quality, affordable LED lights. They are not “industry standard top of the line” lights but they are starting to take a major market share of the industry because they are extremely affordable and very simple to use compared to many of the other traditional lighting companies out there. For the money, it’s hard to go wrong with Aputure. I would recommend these for students to use in the studio or in the field shooting interviews and film projects. In this video we check out a few new lights from Aputure that may be a good fit in your video, film, or broadcast journalism classroom. You can check out everything they have to offer here. These can also be purchased on B&H.

Nanlite is very similar to Aputure in many ways. They make affordable, well-built LED lights that would be good for students to use in the studio or in the field on their broadcast journalism stories or student films. In this video we take a look at their smaller LED panels. If you want to see everything Nanlite has to offer, you can check that out here.

I’m less familiar with Godox overall but I was very impressed with their very affordable and seemingly good quality flexible lights. Flexible lights are LED diodes woven into fabric. You can not get a more lightweight and portable lighting solution than this. These would make great interview lights for broadcast journalism students.

I wasn’t aware of this brand before the NAB Show. They are Aputure’s sound brand and they make decent quality, very affordable audio equipment. I have not personally used any of their products but I did demo them at the show and from what I could tell these would be great for middle and high school video projects.

My Case Builder makes custom, printable foam inserts for production cases. This seems like a great solution for keeping students organized when shooting projects in the field. You can learn more here: https://mycasebuilder.com/

I had the pleasure of meeting EarTec owner, John Hooper and his two sons this week at the NAB Show. EarTec is my favorite intercom-style headset for collaborating on videos shoots. These would be great for live-streaming and sports broadcasts and student film projects.

The new Cloud Pod lets you connect any USB-C drive to your network, allowing multiple students to access or download the same files or footage from a single drive. Learn more here.

Do you ever wish the keyboard shortcuts to Adobe Premiere or Final Cut Pro were just printed on the keyboards for you students? These printed keyboards or keyboard covers from KB Covers are just that. Perfect for an edit bay dedicated to editing. I’ve personally used these keyboards in the past and have found them very useful for learning all the shortcuts.
